Overview

The Echo 84B is a short, powerful fly rod built around one idea: an 8'4" length makes big flies easier to cast accurately. A shorter rod picks line up off the water faster, gets the next cast out sooner and holds its line better in the wind, and Tim Rajeff says 8'4" was the length that worked best in Echo's testing. A progressive taper with a light tip lets the rod load at short range for tight shots along the bank, then dig in for longer casts with heavy streamers and bass bugs.

Echo's action and power chart puts the 84B in the fast-action, high-power corner, alongside the Boost Blue and Streamer X. Every 84B is 4-piece, with an olive blank, a full wells cork grip, a small cork fighting butt and a black up-locking aluminum reel seat, and it ships in a rod tube with a sock. We carry the 6, 7 and 8 wt models, all 8'4".

Which 84B Should You Choose?

Streamers and moderate-sized bass flies with the lightest rod: ECHO84B684 (8'4" 6 wt).

Trout streamers and moderate-sized bass flies on bigger water: ECHO84B784 (8'4" 7 wt).

Echo 84B Models

ECHO84B684 - 8'4" 6 wt

The lightest 84B, at 3.6 oz. Echo pitches it for streamers and moderate-sized bass flies The short length suits rivers and banks where an accurate cast matters more than distance.

Best for: streamers, moderate-sized bass flies, accurate casts to the bank.

Line pairing: A 6 wt weight-forward floating line with a short, heavy head built to turn over bass bugs and streamers. We recommend the SA Amplitude Smooth Titan Long Taper (WF6F) or the SA Amplitude Smooth Infinity (WF6F).

ECHO84B784 - 8'4" 7 wt

The 7 wt (3.8 oz) adds power for trout streamers and moderate-sized bass flies, with enough backbone for bigger rivers and a stiff breeze.

Best for: trout streamers, moderate-sized bass flies.

Line pairing: A 7 wt weight-forward floating line with a short, heavy head for big bugs, or a sink tip when the streamers need to get down. We recommend the SA Amplitude Textured Bass Bug (WF7F) or the SA Amplitude Smooth Titan Long Taper (WF7F).

ECHO84B884 - 8'4" 8 wt

The heaviest 84B we carry, at 4.0 oz. Echo rates it for trout streamers and moderate to larger-sized bass flies, and the short length helps you turn over wind-resistant bugs with less effort.

Best for: trout streamers, moderate to larger bass flies, wind-resistant bugs.

Line pairing: An 8 wt weight-forward floating line with a short, heavy head to carry large bass bugs. We recommend the SA Amplitude Textured Bass Bug (WF8F) or the SA Amplitude Smooth Titan Long Taper (WF8F).

84B vs Boost Fresh, Streamer X and EPR

The 84B is Echo's short rod for big bugs. If you want a longer 9' rod for streamers, the Echo Streamer X comes in 6 to 8 wt and sits just above the 84B in power on Echo's chart. The Echo EPR is Echo's fastest, most powerful rod, at 9' from 6 to 12 wt, for the biggest flies and heavy wind. The Echo Boost Fresh sits just below the 84B on the same chart. For a fiberglass rod at a similar short length, see the 8' Echo Bad Ass Glass Quickshot.
