Overview

The Sage Foundation is the entry point to Sage's single-hand fly rods: a fast-action, multi-species series built by hand on Bainbridge Island, Washington. It covers a lot of water, from a 4 wt for dry flies on a local trout stream to an 8 wt for bonefish, redfish and striped bass.

Sage builds the Foundation on a Graphite IIIe blank in Stealth Black, with black wraps and silver trim, ceramic stripping guides, hard chrome snake guides and a black anodized aluminum up-locking reel seat. The 490-4, 590-4 and 690-4 use a snub-nose half wells cork grip; the 691-4, 790-4 and 890-4 add a full wells grip and EVA fighting butt. Every model we carry is 9' and 4-piece, and ships in a black nylon rod tube with a divided liner.

Which Foundation Should You Choose?

Dry flies and small nymphs on trout streams: 490-4 (9' 4 wt).

One rod for most trout water: 590-4 (9' 5 wt).

Big rivers, wind and smallmouth bass: 690-4 (9' 6 wt).

Streamers and bass bugs, with a fighting butt: 691-4 (9' 6 wt).

Drift-boat streamers on sink tips, or bonefish: 790-4 (9' 7 wt).

Saltwater and bigger fish: bonefish, redfish, stripers: 890-4 (9' 8 wt).

Sage Foundation Models

490-4 - 9' 4 wt

A light, versatile trout rod with good line control and accuracy. It is at its best with dry flies and smaller nymphs on streams and small rivers.

Best for: dry flies, small nymphs, stream trout.

Line pairing: A true-to-weight 4 wt trout taper. We recommend the SA Amplitude Smooth Trout Expert (WF4F) or the SA Amplitude Smooth Infinity (WF4F).

590-4 - 9' 5 wt

Sage calls the 9' 5 wt its most versatile and popular model. It handles trout flies of nearly any size and lines of different densities, with the accuracy and line control to fish dries, nymphs and small streamers in the same day. Reviewers describe a fast but forgiving tip with good reserve power.

Best for: one rod for most trout water.

Line pairing: A 5 wt all-round trout taper. We recommend the SA Amplitude Smooth Infinity (WF5F) or the SA Amplitude Smooth Trout GP (WF5F).

690-4 - 9' 6 wt

A powerful 6 wt with the standard snub-nose half wells grip. It casts large, heavy, wind-resistant flies a long way or straight into the wind, which makes it a strong pick for big-river trout and smallmouth bass.

Best for: big-river trout, smallmouth bass, windy days.

Line pairing: A 6 wt all-purpose taper, or a sink tip for streamers. We recommend the SA Amplitude Smooth Infinity (WF6F) or the SA Amplitude Textured Trout Expert (WF6F).

691-4 - 9' 6 wt

The fighting-butt version of the 690-4, built for streamer anglers. It has the power for large streamers and bass bugs, a full wells cork grip with EVA fighting butt, and an anodized aluminum reel seat that is ready for saltwater. The 691 is Sage's model code, not a length: the rod is 9' long.

Best for: streamers, bass bugs, bigger fish.

Line pairing: A 6 wt streamer or sink-tip line. We recommend the SA Amplitude Smooth Titan Long Taper (WF6F) or the SA Amplitude Smooth Infinity (WF6F).

790-4 - 9' 7 wt

Sage calls the 7 wt a very versatile and often-overlooked rod weight. Fish streamers from a drift boat on sink-tip lines, or take it to the flats to sight fish for bonefish. It has a full wells grip with EVA fighting butt.

Best for: drift-boat streamers, sink tips, bonefish.

Line pairing: A 7 wt all-purpose taper, sink tip or bonefish line. We recommend the SA Amplitude Smooth Infinity (WF7F) or the SA Sonar Titan Sink Tip Sink 3 (WF7F).

890-4 - 9' 8 wt

The most versatile and popular saltwater model in the Foundation family, for bonefish, redfish, striped bass, largemouth bass and fish of similar size. Reviewers note good backbone for pulling strong fish away from structure. It has a full wells grip with EVA fighting butt.

Best for: bonefish, redfish, striped bass, largemouth bass.

Line pairing: An 8 wt bonefish or saltwater taper. We recommend the SA Amplitude Textured Bonefish (WF8F) or the SA Amplitude Smooth Titan Long Taper (WF8F).

Foundation vs Other Sage Rods

The Foundation is the least expensive single-hand series in the Sage lineup. The Sage Arrow is the step up for trout: KonneticHD graphite, a walnut reel seat insert on its half wells models, a Fuji stripping guide and an aluminum rod tube. The Sage Payload is Sage's short, heavy-line rod for streamers and bass, and the Sage R8 Core sits above both. If you want a reel and line too, the Sage Foundation Outfit pairs this rod with a SPECTRUM C reel and RIO Gold line.

Sage Foundation FAQ

Is the Foundation a good first Sage rod?

Yes. It is Sage's entry-level single-hand series, with a fast action that reviewers describe as forgiving at the tip and strong in reserve, and it works with floating and sinking lines.

Where is the Sage Foundation made?

It is built by hand on Bainbridge Island, Washington.

Does it come with a case?

Yes, a black nylon rod tube with a divided liner.

What is the difference between the 690-4 and the 691-4?

Both are 9' 6 wt 4-piece rods. The 690-4 has a snub-nose half wells grip; the 691-4 has a full wells grip with an EVA fighting butt for streamers and bigger fish.

Which Foundation weight should I choose?

The 590-4 for most trout fishing, the 690-4 or 691-4 for big rivers and bigger flies, and the 890-4 for saltwater and bass.

What is the warranty?

Sage covers its rods for the original owner against defects in materials and workmanship. Breakage outside that coverage is repaired for a fee set by the age of the rod.
