R8 Core is a rod family focused on maximum versatility and applies new revolutionary material technology through our forward thinking lens of what we’re seeing out on the water where one rod needs to show even greater range. At its Core, R8 Core traces a direct lineage to Sage’s multi application vision, one shaped by the fishing evolutions happening all around us—from habitats we stalk and waters we frequent, to the flies we fish and the diversity of species we now target.

Description
Overview
The Sage R8 Core is Sage's fast-action, all-water flagship and the rod that replaced the Sage X in 2022. It covers trout rivers, lakes, streamer banks, steelhead water and light flats fishing, with 4-piece models from 8'6" to 10'. Every R8 Core is built by hand on Bainbridge Island, Washington.
The blank uses Sage's Revolution 8 (R8) Technology: an aerospace composite with greater hoop strength, nano-sintered resin, a new axial fiber and a circumferential hoop fiber that helps the blank hold its shape under load. Sage designed it for a stiffer backbone and a more sensitive tip, with more flex and feel deeper into the butt than the X, and a sweet spot that sits closer to the hand. Reviewers rate it a lighter and better all-round trout rod than the X.

Sage R8 Core Models
486-4 - 8'6" 4 wt
Sage built this one for trout anglers who fish small to medium flies to selective fish. It is light and accurate in hand, protects light tippets, and still has the range to cover a mid-sized river.
Best for: dry flies on small and medium rivers, selective trout.
Line pairing: A 4 wt trout taper for delicate dry-fly presentations. We recommend the SA Amplitude Smooth Trout Expert (WF4F) or the SA Amplitude Smooth Infinity (WF4F).
490-4 - 9' 4 wt
A light, versatile 9' trout rod with good line control and accuracy, at its best with dry flies and smaller nymphs. Testers liked it on tailwaters and alpine lakes, and found it loads best with a line on the heavier side of 4 wt.
Best for: tailwater dries, small nymphs, alpine lakes.
Line pairing: A 4 wt trout line, ideally one that runs slightly heavy to load the rod. We recommend the SA Amplitude Smooth Trout Expert (WF4F) or the SA Amplitude Smooth MPX (WF4F).
4100-4 - 10' 4 wt
Sage singles out the 10' 4 wt as a nymphing rod: the length gives line control on long drifts, while the tip stays accurate and sensitive enough to see strikes and protect light tippet. It also handles dry-dropper rigs on freestone rivers.
Best for: nymphing, dry-dropper, long drifts.
Line pairing: A 4 wt trout line, or a level euro nymph line for tight-line work. We recommend the SA Amplitude Smooth Trout Expert (WF4F) or the SA Mastery Euro Tactical Nymph (0.022 in level).
590-4 - 9' 5 wt
Sage calls the 590-4 its most versatile and most popular model. It handles trout flies of nearly any size and lines of different densities, and reviewers rate it a better dry-fly rod than earlier Sage 5 wts.
Best for: one rod for most trout water.
Line pairing: A 5 wt trout or all-purpose taper. We recommend the SA Amplitude Smooth Infinity (WF5F) or the RIO Elite Gold (WF5F).
596-4FB - 9'6" 5 wt
A slightly longer 5 wt for extra casting distance and line control. It suits big rivers, nymphing and stillwater, mends easily, and testers found it accurate at 30 to 45 feet with dry-dropper rigs. It has a full-wells grip with fighting butt.
Best for: big rivers, mending, dry-dropper, stillwater.
Line pairing: A 5 wt trout taper with enough belly to mend. We recommend the SA Amplitude Smooth Infinity (WF5F) or the RIO Elite Gold (WF5F).
5100-4FB - 10' 5 wt
Sage's longest 5 wt is also its most powerful, with the most line control and mending ability in the weight. It is at home on stillwater and big, windy rivers and from a drift boat, though it is heavier to cast all day than the 9' rods. Full-wells grip with fighting butt.
Best for: stillwater, nymphing, big windy water.
Line pairing: A 5 wt floating or intermediate stillwater line. We recommend the SA Amplitude Smooth Infinity (WF5F) or the RIO Elite Gold (WF5F).
690-4 - 9' 6 wt
A powerful trout rod for large, heavy, wind-resistant flies at distance or into the wind. It is a natural fit for big-river trout and smallmouth bass, and for hopper-dropper and stonefly rigs from a drift boat.
Best for: big-river trout, smallmouth, hopper-dropper from the boat.
Line pairing: A 6 wt all-purpose taper that turns over big flies. We recommend the SA Amplitude Smooth Infinity (WF6F) or the SA Amplitude Smooth MPX (WF6F).
690-4FB - 9' 6 wt
The fighting butt version of the 690-4, aimed at streamer fishing with large patterns and at bass bugs. It has an all-water anodized aluminum reel seat and a full-wells grip.
Best for: streamers, bass bugs, all-water use.
Line pairing: A 6 wt streamer or all-purpose taper. We recommend the SA Amplitude Smooth Infinity (WF6F) or the SA Amplitude Smooth Titan Long Taper (WF6F).
696-4FB - 9'6" 6 wt
Made for big trout rivers where streamers and nymph rigs are the usual program, with an all-water reel seat and a fighting butt. Testers also used it for smallmouth and small bonefish.
Best for: big-water trout, streamers, nymph rigs.
Line pairing: A 6 wt all-purpose or streamer taper. We recommend the SA Amplitude Smooth Infinity (WF6F) or the SA Amplitude Smooth MPX (WF6F).
6100-4FB - 10' 6 wt
Ten feet of line control and power, with an all-water reel seat that makes it equally useful on the beach or on a big trout river. Testers liked it for stillwater and distance casting.
Best for: stillwater, beach fishing, big-river trout.
Line pairing: A 6 wt floating or intermediate line. We recommend the SA Amplitude Smooth Infinity (WF6F) or the SA Amplitude Smooth MPX (WF6F).
790-4 - 9' 7 wt
An often-overlooked weight that covers a lot of ground: drift-boat streamers, bass, trophy trout and Alaska salmon, and a light flats rod for spooky bonefish. Big largemouth poppers are fair game too. Full-wells grip with fighting butt.
Best for: streamers, bass, trophy trout, light flats.
Line pairing: A 7 wt all-purpose, bass or light saltwater taper. We recommend the SA Amplitude Smooth Infinity (WF7F) or the SA Amplitude Textured Bass Bug (WF7F).
7100-4 - 10' 7 wt
Sage gives this rod the most line control of any of its 7 wts, for mending on rivers and distance on lakes and big rivers. Testers used it for steelhead and salmon, indicator nymphing and single-hand Spey casting.
Best for: steelhead, salmon, indicator nymphing.
Line pairing: A 7 wt anadromous indicator line or a Titan-style taper. We recommend the SA Amplitude Smooth Anadro (WF7F) or the SA Amplitude Smooth Titan Long Taper (WF7F).
890-4 - 9' 8 wt
Sage calls the 890-4 its most versatile all-water model: trout, salmon and bass in fresh water, and a flats rod for wind and precise presentations in the salt. Testers used it for stripers and bonefish and found it on the softer side for an 8 wt.
Best for: stripers, bonefish, salmon, bass.
Line pairing: An 8 wt bonefish, striper or all-purpose taper. We recommend the SA Amplitude Smooth Infinity (WF8F) or the SA Amplitude Smooth Striper (WF8F).
R8 Core vs Other Sage R8 Rods
The R8 Core sits in the middle of Sage's R8 family. The Sage Classic R8 is the moderate, deep-loading dry-fly sibling with a softer tip and more mid-flex. The Sage Power R8 is ultrafast and generates more line speed than the R8 Core, for wind, heavy rigs and big flies.
For saltwater, the Sage Salt R8 adds titanium Fuji K stripping guides and heavier reel seats. The R8 Core 790-4 and 890-4 still double as light flats rods if you fish mostly fresh water and travel to the salt now and then.
