Developed for when the largest of flies are on the menu. Whether you’re popping for panfish with the 689-4, pitching big divers for largemouth with the 889-4, or chucking a small beaver for Musky with the 1193-4, the easy-loading but powerful blank of the PAYLOAD makes blind-casting even the most obscene of flies all-day a practical activity.

Description

Overview

The Sage Payload is Sage's big-fly rod: a fast-action series built to throw heavy lines and bulky, wind-resistant flies, then give you real leverage once a big fish is on. It covers the whole predator menu, from articulated trout streamers and bass bugs to pike flies, big poppers, large baitfish patterns and musky flies a foot long, in fresh water or salt. It is built by Sage on Bainbridge Island, Washington.

Sage gave the Payload a very powerful tip to pick heavy lines off the water, strong mid sections, and a more forgiving butt that allows a slower, more relaxed casting stroke and adds leverage when fighting fish. Most models are 8'9" instead of the usual 9': the shorter lever is easier to cast all day and easier to land fish with from a boat. Line ratings are written 6+, 7+ and so on, and Sage recommends going one line size heavier than the rod's rating. The blank is Sage's Tannin brown with Burgundy wraps and Bronze trim, built with Konnetic Technology.

Which Payload Should You Choose?

Trout streamers and light bass bugs: 689-4 (8'9" 6 wt).

Smallmouth and big trout on large streamers: 789-4 (8'9" 7 wt).

Pike, largemouth, larger stripers and snook: 989-4 (8'9" 9 wt).

Musky and flies 12" and longer: 1193-4 (9'3" 11 wt).

Sage Payload Models

689-4 - 8'9" 6 wt

The lightest Payload, built for launching double-articulated streamers to the far bank and for light-duty bass bugs, with enough backbone for light saltwater work. Sage rates it for lines of 200 to 230 grains.

Best for: trout streamers, light bass bugs, light-duty saltwater.

Line pairing: A 7 wt streamer or bass taper, one size up as Sage recommends, or a sink tip for deeper runs. We recommend the SA Amplitude Smooth Titan Long Taper (WF7F) or the SA Amplitude Textured Bass Bug (WF7F).

789-4 - 8'9" 7 wt

Handles everything from boogle bugs to large trout streamers. Sage pitches it for light-duty smallmouth fishing and for banging the banks for big, predatory trout. Sage rates it for 230 to 270 grains.

Best for: smallmouth bass, big trout on streamers, bass bugs.

Line pairing: An 8 wt streamer or bass taper, or a sink tip when the fish hold deep. We recommend the SA Mastery Titan (WF8F) or the SA Amplitude Smooth Titan Long Taper (WF8F).

989-4 - 8'9" 9 wt

The most versatile Payload, made for pike flies, large poppers and big baitfish patterns. Sage aims it at pike, largemouth bass, larger striped bass, snook and other saltwater species, and reviewers note it loads well across a range of grain weights and head lengths. Sage rates it for 320 to 370 grains.

Best for: pike, largemouth bass, striped bass, snook.

Line pairing: A 10 wt predator, jungle or striper taper, or an intermediate for stripers and salt. We recommend the SA Amplitude Smooth Tropical Jungle Titan (WF10F) or the SA Amplitude Smooth Striper (WF10F).

1193-4 - 9'3" 11 wt

Sage's dedicated musky rod for flies of 12" and longer, also suited to other big predatory species. The extra length adds reach for figure-eights and line control, and the fighting butt has an extended 3" rear grip for two-handed leverage. Sage rates it for 420 to 480 grains.

Best for: musky, big pike, oversized flies.

Line pairing: A 12 wt pike, musky or tropical taper, or a full intermediate. We recommend the SA Amplitude Smooth Tropical Jungle Titan (WF12F) or the SA Amplitude Textured Tropical Titan (WF12F).

Payload vs Other Sage Rods

The Payload is Sage's big-fly rod for fresh water and salt, and it took over from Sage's old Pike/Musky rods. If your fishing is mostly saltwater flats, look at Sage's saltwater-specific series instead: the Sage Signal for a mid-priced flats rod and the Sage Salt R8 at the top of the line. For all-round trout fishing, Sage's flagship is the Sage R8 Core. Choose the Payload when the flies are big, the lines are heavy and the fish fight hard.

Sage Payload FAQ

Where is the Payload made?

Built by Sage on Bainbridge Island, Washington.

What line should I use?

Sage recommends one line size heavier than the rod's rating, for example a 7 wt line on the 689-4. Sage also publishes a grain window for each model, listed above.

Why are most Payload rods 8'9"?

Sage made them slightly shorter than 9' so the rod is easier to cast all day and easier to land fish with, especially from a boat. The 11 wt is 9'3" for extra reach.

Which Payload should I buy?

The 789-4 for trout streamers and smallmouth, the 989-4 for pike, largemouth and stripers, and the 1193-4 for musky.

Does it come with a case?

Yes, a black ballistic rod tube with an embroidered Sage logo.

What is the warranty?

Sage covers its rods for the original owner against defects in materials and workmanship. Breakage outside that coverage is repaired for a fee set by the age of the rod.
