Most salt rods are built for pure power and ultimate strength—that is table stakes for the venue and the discipline. With our new R8 graphite, adding 25% more strength-per-weight was the easy part—a simple function of material advancement—but one that also increased the fight in the rod even down to our six-weight. We increased the pure pulling power without the need to add more material, fillers or reinforcement. The outcome is simple, providing the ability for faster landing times and reducing fish stress and catch-and-release pressure on ever so delicate ecosystems.

Overview

The Sage Salt R8 is Sage's saltwater-specific, fast-action family and the replacement for the Salt HD. Sage built it on Revolution 8 graphite, which it says gives about 25% more strength per weight without adding material: more pulling power, faster landings and less stress on the fish, with enough touch left for precise presentations on the flats. Every model is 9', 4-piece and built by hand on Bainbridge Island, Washington.

The saltwater guide set uses upturned titanium Fuji K stripping guides to cut line friction, followed by oversized hard chromed snake guides and tip-top. Every rod has a heavy-duty anodized aluminum up-locking reel seat with oversized locking rings and a hidden hook keeper, a Flor-grade cork full-wells grip and an EVA fighting butt. The blank is Tempest Blue with slate wraps and graduated white and grey trim.

Sage Salt R8 Models

790-4 - 9' 7 wt

The lightest Salt R8 we carry is a bonefish rod for light wind, small flies and shallow water, and a light inshore rod for flood-tide redfish. It throws tight, controlled loops and has a slim full-wells grip, though testers found it a little particular about line choice and too soft for heavy striper or Titan-style heads.

Best for: bonefish in light wind, flood-tide redfish, shallow flats.

Line pairing: A 7 wt bonefish taper. We recommend the SA Amplitude Textured Bonefish (WF7F) or the SA Amplitude Smooth Redfish Warm (WF7F).

890-4 - 9' 8 wt

Sage pitches the 890-4 as an all-around bonefish rod from the Bahamas and Belize to Christmas Island and the Florida Keys, an all-around redfish rod from the Gulf to the Atlantic, and a sight-fishing striper rod on the flats of Maine and Cape Cod. Testers picked it as the favorite of the series and the one that handled the widest range of lines.

Best for: bonefish, redfish, sight-fished stripers.

Line pairing: An 8 wt bonefish or all-round saltwater taper. We recommend the SA Amplitude Textured Bonefish (WF8F) or the SA Amplitude Smooth Bonefish Plus (WF8F).

990-4 - 9' 9 wt

A versatile 9 wt for permit, baby tarpon, snook, bonefish, bull redfish and striped bass, from the Keys and Belize to Maine, Hawaii and the Gulf. Testers rated it a good crossover rod for permit and redfish, with less muscle for the biggest striper flies.

Best for: permit, snook, bull redfish, baby tarpon.

Line pairing: A 9 wt all-round saltwater or permit taper. We recommend the SA Amplitude Smooth Grand Slam (WF9F) or the SA Amplitude Smooth Tropical Jungle Titan (WF9F).

1090-4 - 9' 10 wt

Sage lists Caribbean tarpon, Mexican permit, Gulf Coast redfish, Northeast striped bass and Baja roosterfish for the 10 wt. It is softer than the old Salt HD 10, which suits small to medium tarpon and bigger permit; testers found very heavy heads overloaded it.

Best for: small to mid tarpon, big permit, roosterfish.

Line pairing: A 10 wt tarpon or permit taper, not an overweight head. We recommend the SA Amplitude Smooth Tarpon (WF10F) or the SA Amplitude Smooth Grand Slam (WF10F).

1190-4 - 9' 11 wt

Sage's go-to rod for South Florida tarpon averaging 50 to 150 pounds, built for lighter tarpon flies and softer, quicker presentations. Testers found it soft for an 11 wt, so it rewards a good caster on technical tarpon.

Best for: South Florida tarpon, lighter flies, technical presentations.

Line pairing: An 11 wt tarpon taper. We recommend the SA Amplitude Smooth Tarpon (WF11F) or the SA Amplitude Textured Tarpon (WF11F).

1290-4 - 9' 12 wt

The Salt R8 tarpon rod for the biggest fish and heaviest flies, from deep-water tarpon in Costa Rica to huge Gulf Coast Florida fish.

Best for: big tarpon, heavy flies.

Line pairing: A 12 wt tarpon taper. We recommend the SA Amplitude Smooth Tarpon (WF12F) or the SA Amplitude Textured Tarpon (WF12F).

1290-4FG - 9' 12 wt extended grip

The 12 wt with an extended full-wells grip and EVA fighting butt for more leverage. Sage calls it an all-around GT rod for Christmas Island and the Pacific and Indian Oceans, and a midweight bluewater rod for mid-sized billfish and tuna. Unlike most of the series it is not soft: testers compared it to the old Xi3 and found it can throw a lot of line.

Best for: giant trevally, mid-sized billfish and tuna, big tarpon.

Line pairing: A 12 wt tropical Titan-style or bluewater taper. We recommend the SA Amplitude Textured Tropical Titan (WF12F) or the SA Amplitude Smooth Tropical Jungle Titan (WF12F).

Salt R8 vs Other Sage R8 Rods

The Sage R8 Core is the freshwater-first all-water rod; its 790-4 and 890-4 work as light flats rods, but they use Fuji ceramic stripping guides and lighter seats. The Salt R8 adds titanium Fuji K guides, heavier reel seats and Sage's strength claim for fish that pull hard.

The Sage Power R8 890-4 is an ultrafast all-water rod for long shots and sinking lines in fresh or salt water. Choose the Salt R8 for dedicated flats and tarpon fishing, and the Power R8 if you split time between big fresh water and the salt.

Sage Salt R8 FAQ

Where is the Salt R8 made?

Each rod is built by hand, one at a time, on Bainbridge Island, Washington.

Does it come with a case?

Yes, an aluminum rod tube with a Sage medallion and a black rod bag with a quick-tie cord lock.

What is the warranty?

Sage covers its rods for the original owner against defects in materials and workmanship. Breakage outside that coverage is repaired for a fee set by the age of the rod.

How does it compare to the Salt HD?

The Salt R8 replaced the Salt HD and adds upturned stripping guides. Testers found most of the new lineup softer than the Salt HD, with the 12 wt FG the exception.

Which weight should I choose?

For bonefish and redfish, the 890-4 (9' 8 wt). For permit, the 990-4 or 1090-4. For tarpon, the 1190-4 or 1290-4, and the 1290-4FG for giant trevally and bluewater.

What does FG mean?

The 1290-4FG has an extended full-wells grip with an EVA fighting butt, for leverage on big fish. Every other Salt R8 has a standard full-wells grip with a fighting butt.
