Overview

The Sage Power R8 is the ultrafast member of Sage's R8 family, launched in January 2026 for anglers who need line speed: rough conditions, long casts, heavy rigs and large flies. It follows the Method and the Igniter as Sage's ultrafast rod, and testers found it more forgiving than both, with more feedback and smoother loading. Every Power R8 is built one at a time on Bainbridge Island, Washington.

Sage calls the blank tuning R8 Performance+: its Revolution 8 (R8) technology, with a new axial fiber, a circumferential hoop fiber and a taper that thickens faster from tip to butt, pushed to an ultrafast action. The Hot Rod Red blank has burgundy wraps with grey and black trim, Fuji K-Series stripping guides with SiC rings and hard chrome snake guides. It is still a specialist: testers did not recommend it for small streams and short, soft casts.

Which Power R8 Should You Choose?

Windy trout water and long casts: 590-4 (9' 5 wt).

Big dries, streamers and sinking lines: 690-4 (9' 6 wt).

Small bonefish and drift-boat streamers: 690-4FB (9' 6 wt, fighting butt).

Lakes, sea-run fish and the beach: 696-4FB (9'6" 6 wt).

Bonefish and heavy lines, fresh or salt: 890-4 (9' 8 wt).

Sage Power R8 Models

590-4 - 9' 5 wt

What Sage calls its most versatile trout rod, with extra power for line speed and long casts, across a wide range of lines and flies. It is built for windy streamer days and long, accurate casts to the bank, and testers found it accurate and powerful at 30, 45 and 60-plus feet with good feel for an ultrafast rod. The trade-off is a heavier swing weight that shows during long sessions of blind casting.

Best for: wind, streamers, long accurate casts.

Line pairing: A 5 wt trout taper that runs slightly heavy, or an all-purpose taper. We recommend the SA Amplitude Smooth MPX (WF5F) or the SA Amplitude Smooth Infinity (WF5F).

690-4 - 9' 6 wt

Adds reserve power and line speed to one of the most universal line weights: big dry flies into the wind, large streamers at distance, and sinking lines. Snub-nose half-wells grip and walnut insert seat.

Best for: big dries in wind, streamers at distance, sinking lines.

Line pairing: A 6 wt all-purpose taper, or a sink tip for streamers. We recommend the SA Amplitude Smooth MPX (WF6F) or the SA Amplitude Smooth Infinity (WF6F).

690-4FB - 9' 6 wt

The fighting butt version of the 690-4, with a slim full-wells grip and an anodized aluminum seat. Sage aims it at small bonefish with bead-chain flies and at streamer fishing to the bank from a drift boat; the fighting butt adds leverage in the fight and support while casting.

Best for: small bonefish, drift-boat streamers.

Line pairing: A 6 wt all-purpose or bonefish taper. We recommend the SA Amplitude Smooth Infinity (WF6F) or the SA Amplitude Smooth Bonefish (WF6F).

696-4FB - 9'6" 6 wt

For trout, anadromous species and lake fish. The extra six inches help with steeple casts over obstacles on the beach and with carrying more line while seated in a boat. Slim full-wells grip with EVA fighting butt.

Best for: lakes, anadromous fish, beach and boat fishing.

Line pairing: A 6 wt floating or intermediate line. We recommend the SA Amplitude Smooth Infinity (WF6F) or the SA Amplitude Smooth Titan Long Taper (WF6F).

890-4 - 9' 8 wt

A go-to rod for mixed conditions: long shots at bonefish in technical conditions, and the reserve power to lift and place sinking lines in salt or fresh water. Full-wells grip with EVA fighting butt.

Best for: bonefish, sinking lines, mixed fresh and salt.

Line pairing: An 8 wt all-purpose or bonefish taper, or a sink tip. We recommend the SA Amplitude Smooth Infinity (WF8F) or the SA Amplitude Textured Bonefish (WF8F).

Power R8 vs Other Sage R8 Rods

The Sage R8 Core is the fast all-water rod in the same family; the Power R8 generates more line speed. The Sage Classic R8 is at the opposite end, a moderate rod for dry flies at short to medium range.

For dedicated flats and tarpon fishing, the Sage Salt R8 is the saltwater-specific family. If you are replacing a Sage Igniter, the Power R8 is the rod that follows it.

Sage Power R8 FAQ

Where is the Power R8 made?

Each rod is built one at a time on Bainbridge Island, Washington.

Does it come with a case?

Yes, an aluminum rod tube with a Sage medallion and a black rod bag with a quick-tie cord lock.

What is the warranty?

Sage covers its rods for the original owner against defects in materials and workmanship. Breakage outside that coverage is repaired for a fee set by the age of the rod.

How does it compare to the Igniter?

Testers found the Power R8 more forgiving and versatile than the Igniter and the Method, with more feedback and smoother loading, while keeping the ultrafast line speed.

Which Power R8 should I choose?

For trout in wind and long casts, the 590-4 (9' 5 wt). For streamers and sinking lines, the 690-4. For bonefish and mixed fresh and salt, the 890-4.

Is it a good first rod?

It is a specialist ultrafast rod. For small streams and short, delicate casts, the R8 Core or Classic R8 is a better fit.
