Description
Overview
The Sage Classic R8 is a moderate-action trout series for anglers who would rather fish slowly and feel every cast. Sage calls the action deep-loading: the rod bends well into the blank, recovers quickly and stays light in the hand, which suits dry flies and soft hackles at short to medium range. Announced in January 2025, it took over from the Trout LL as Sage's dry-fly rod, and every rod is made entirely by hand on Bainbridge Island, Washington.
Sage tuned its high-modulus Revolution 8 (R8) graphite to bend more, and the result is one of the lightest Sage rods testers have measured. The finish nods to Sage's history: a Sage Brown blank, chestnut wraps with beige trim, an extra-figured walnut insert in a custom aluminum up-locking seat, and a Super-Plus grade cork snub-nose half-wells grip. There are seven models from 3 to 6 wt, all 4-piece, and we carry all seven.

Sage Classic R8 Models
380-4 - 8' 3 wt
The shortest Classic R8 is made for bluelines, creeks and small rivers: pocket water and accurate casts in tight spaces. It loads easily and casts quickly, and it is the quickest rod in the series, happiest at 30 to 40 feet. It has a slim snub-nose half-wells grip.
Best for: creeks, bluelines, pocket water.
Line pairing: A 3 wt creek or trout taper for short, accurate casts. We recommend the SA Amplitude Smooth Creek Trout (WF3F) or the SA Amplitude Smooth Trout GP (WF3F).
386-4 - 8'6" 3 wt
A precise, delicate 3 wt for picky trout and small to medium flies on smaller water, and more versatile than its weight suggests in experienced hands. It is slower and sensitive to tempo, with a soft tip, and shines with tiny dry flies on technical water.
Best for: small dry flies, technical water, selective trout.
Line pairing: A 3 wt trout taper with a delicate front end. We recommend the SA Amplitude Smooth Trout GP (WF3F) or the SA Amplitude Textured Trout Expert (WF3F).
486-4 - 8'6" 4 wt
A walk-and-wade dry-fly rod for short to medium casts at rising fish, accurate and sensitive with trout of nearly every size. It is the softest model in the series, best on calm days, and also handles dry-droppers in pocket water.
Best for: walk-and-wade dry flies, rising fish, pocket water.
Line pairing: A 4 wt trout line with a little extra mass to smooth the flex. We recommend the SA Amplitude Smooth Trout Expert (WF4F) or the RIO Elite Gold (WF4F).
490-4 - 9' 4 wt
Built for medium dry flies and soft hackles, light and precise for picky fish on rivers and stillwater, with the length to handle a longer line. Testers also liked it for tailwater dry-dropper and light nymph rigs.
Best for: medium dries, soft hackles, tailwater dry-dropper.
Line pairing: A 4 wt trout line, ideally one with a little extra mass. We recommend the SA Amplitude Smooth Trout Expert (WF4F) or the RIO Elite Gold (WF4F).
586-4 - 8'6" 5 wt
Gives up a little distance for accuracy and control at close range, even in wind. It suits anglers who fish on foot for trout with larger flies, and testers found it light and springy on small to medium rivers with hoppers and small streamers.
Best for: hoppers, small streamers, small to medium rivers.
Line pairing: A 5 wt trout taper. We recommend the SA Amplitude Smooth Trout GP (WF5F) or the SA Amplitude Textured Trout Expert (WF5F).
590-4 - 9' 5 wt
Sage calls the 590-4 the most versatile Classic R8: dry flies and soft hackles of every size on small to large water, with power for big trout and wind and sensitivity for light tippet. Testers called it a dry-fly scalpel at 30 to 45 feet that rewards a patient stroke.
Best for: one Classic R8 for most dry-fly water.
Line pairing: A 5 wt trout taper. We recommend the SA Amplitude Smooth Trout GP (WF5F) or the SA Amplitude Textured Trout Expert (WF5F).
690-4 - 9' 6 wt
The most powerful Classic R8, for wide rivers, longer casts, steady wind and big, bulky dry flies. It keeps the series' unhurried pace but has more energy to lift and carry a long line and turn over big flies, with less fatigue.
Best for: big rivers, wind, big bulky dries.
Line pairing: A 6 wt trout or all-purpose taper. We recommend the SA Amplitude Smooth Infinity (WF6F) or the SA Amplitude Smooth Trout GP (WF6F).
Classic R8 vs Other Sage R8 Rods
The Sage R8 Core is the fast-action, all-water rod in the same family; next to it the Classic R8 has a softer tip and more mid-flex, and it is built for feel at everyday trout distances rather than maximum range. The Sage Power R8 sits at the opposite end of the family, an ultrafast rod for line speed, heavy rigs and big flies.
Against the Trout LL it replaces, the Classic R8 flexes deeper and gives more feedback.
Sage Classic R8 FAQ

Does it come with a case?
Yes, an aluminum rod tube with a Sage medallion and a black rod bag with a quick-tie cord lock.
