Description

Overview

The Sage ESN is Sage's dedicated European-style nymphing rod, built for both long-line and short-line techniques on everything from small creeks to big rivers. It is built on Bainbridge Island, Washington, and it is the only dedicated euro nymphing series in Sage's current lineup. Some shops list it as the ESN HD; it is the same KonneticHD rod.

Sage pairs a KonneticHD backbone, for recovery, sensitivity, shock absorption and low swing weight, with a medium action and a soft, sensitive tip that protects fine tippet and shows subtle strikes. To save weight it uses Fuji ceramic stripping guides with hard chrome single-foot snake guides. It has a Black Ice blank with garnet wraps and charcoal trim, a Stealth Black anodized down-locking reel seat, a snub-nose half wells cork grip, and the line weight laser-etched on the sliding band. Every ESN is 4-piece and ships in a black rod bag and black powder-coated aluminum tube.

Which ESN Should You Choose?

Small creeks, light flies and smaller fish: 2100-4 (10' 2 wt).

One euro rod for most rivers: 3100-4 (10' 3 wt).

Big rivers and extra reach: 3106-4 (10'6" 3 wt).

Sage ESN Models

2100-4 - 10' 2 wt

Built for small, close-range water with light flies and small fish, the creeks where a delicate presentation matters most.

Best for: small creeks, light nymphs, smaller fish.

Line pairing: A thin euro nymphing line, or a 2 wt floating line for dry-dropper. We recommend the SA Mastery Euro Tactical Nymph (0.022 in level) or the SA Amplitude Smooth Trout Expert (WF2F).

3100-4 - 10' 3 wt

Sage calls the 3100-4 the most versatile ESN: an all-round rod for long-line and short-line techniques that handles heavier flies or emergers, and anything from small wild fish to trophy fish.

Best for: one euro nymphing rod for most rivers.

Line pairing: A dedicated euro nymph line, or a 3 wt trout line for dry-dropper. We recommend the SA Mastery Euro Tactical Nymph (0.022 in level) or the SA Amplitude Textured Trout Expert (WF3F).

3106-4 - 10'6" 3 wt

The extra six inches adds reach so you can cover water more effectively, with the strength for varied conditions.

Best for: big rivers, long drifts, covering more water.

Line pairing: A dedicated euro nymph line. We recommend the SA Mastery Euro Tactical Nymph (0.022 in level) or the SA Amplitude Textured Trout Expert (WF3F).

ESN vs Other Sage Rods

The ESN is built only for euro nymphing, with a medium action and a soft tip. The Sage Arrow 5100-4FB is a fast 10' 5 wt for nymphing and long drifts on a conventional fly line, a better fit if you also want to cast indicators, dries and streamers. The Sage R8 Core is Sage's all-round premium trout rod. For small-stream dry fly fishing, see the Sage Dart.

Sage ESN FAQ

What is a euro nymphing rod?

A long, light-line rod for fishing weighted nymphs on a thin line or leader with little or no fly line out of the guides. The length gives reach and drift control, and the soft tip protects light tippet and shows strikes.

Is the ESN HD a different rod?

No. Some shops call it the ESN HD. It is the same KonneticHD ESN, and it won a 2018 European nymphing rod shootout.

Which ESN should I choose?

The 3100-4 is the most versatile. Choose the 2100-4 for small creeks and smaller fish, and the 3106-4 for big rivers where extra reach helps.

Where is the ESN made?

It is built on Bainbridge Island, Washington.

Does it come with a case?

Yes, a black rod bag and a black powder-coated aluminum rod tube with a Sage medallion.

What is the warranty?

Sage covers its rods for the original owner against defects in materials and workmanship. Breakage outside that coverage is repaired for a fee set by the age of the rod.
