Overview

The G. Loomis NRX+ LP is the light presentation member of the NRX+ family, a dry-fly rod for technical trout water and fish that refuse anything but a clean drift. It is handcrafted in Woodland, Washington. Where the standard NRX+ is fast, the LP has a smooth, stable action built for accurate, soft presentations at short to medium range, with reserve power when you need it.

It uses the same Mega Modulus+ graphite and GL8 resin as the rest of the NRX+ line, with a titanium SiC stripping guide and titanium recoil guides. The finish is more traditional than the freshwater NRX+: a cigar grip on the 3 and 4 wt, a half wells grip on the 5 and 6 wt, and an amboyna hardwood insert in a double uplocking aluminum reel seat. There are four models, 3 to 6 wt, all 4-piece, and we carry all four.

Which NRX+ LP Should You Choose?

Small streams, spring creeks and fine tippet: NRX+ LP 383-4 (8'3" 3 wt).

Technical dry flies on small to medium streams: NRX+ LP 486-4 (8'6" 4 wt).

Dry flies on medium rivers and tailwaters: NRX+ LP 590-4 (9' 5 wt).

Bigger dries and hoppers, bigger water and wind: NRX+ LP 690-4 (9' 6 wt).

G. Loomis NRX+ LP Models

NRX+ LP 383-4 - 8'3" 3 wt

The shortest, lightest LP, for small streams and spring creeks where the fish are spooky, the flies are small and the tippet is fine. It has a cigar grip.

Best for: small streams, spring creeks, technical dry flies.

Line pairing: A 3 wt creek or trout taper. We recommend the SA Amplitude Smooth Creek Trout (WF3F) or the SA Amplitude Smooth Trout GP (WF3F).

NRX+ LP 486-4 - 8'6" 4 wt

A 4 wt for technical dry-fly fishing on small to medium streams, light enough for delicate drifts with room for a light nymph rig. It has a cigar grip.

Best for: technical dry flies, small to medium streams, light nymphing.

Line pairing: A 4 wt trout taper. We recommend the SA Amplitude Smooth Trout Expert (WF4F) or the RIO Elite Gold (WF4F).

NRX+ LP 590-4 - 9' 5 wt

The 5 wt LP is for technical dry-fly fishing on medium rivers and tailwaters. Owners describe it as light, smooth and accurate with delicate presentations, and some also use it for dry-droppers, nymphing and light streamers. It has a half wells grip.

Best for: dry flies on rivers and tailwaters, dry-droppers.

Line pairing: A 5 wt trout taper with a delicate front end. We recommend the SA Amplitude Smooth Trout GP (WF5F) or the SA Amplitude Textured Trout Expert (WF5F).

NRX+ LP 690-4 - 9' 6 wt

The LP with the most reserve power, for larger dries and hoppers on bigger water and for windier days when you still want a soft presentation. It has a half wells grip.

Best for: hoppers and big dries, bigger rivers, wind.

Line pairing: A 6 wt trout or all-round taper. We recommend the SA Amplitude Smooth Infinity (WF6F) or the SA Amplitude Smooth Trout GP (WF6F).

NRX+ LP vs Other G. Loomis Fly Rods

The G. Loomis NRX+ is the fast-action, all-condition freshwater version, with walnut-insert or fighting-butt reel seats and lengths up to 10'. Reviewers find the fast NRX+ 590-4 close to the LP in precision and better with big flies, which makes the LP the more delicate tool. The NRX+ Salt covers 7 to 12 wt for saltwater.

The G. Loomis Asquith is the fast-action flagship rather than a presentation rod. For small creeks on a smaller budget, look at the G. Loomis IMX-PRO Creek.
