Description
Overview
The G. Loomis NRX+ is the fast-action freshwater rod of the NRX+ family, handcrafted in Woodland, Washington. It is made for the conditions that expose a rod: wind, braided and conflicting currents, and casts that have to land tight to structure. A compound taper delivers line speed and stable loops at range without losing the feel you need for short, accurate presentations.
The blank pairs G. Loomis Mega Modulus+ graphite with GL8 resin, a system that keeps strength and impact resistance while using less material, and the Mega Modulus+ matrix is 15% lighter than the graphite in the original NRX. The freshwater lineup runs from 4 to 8 wt, all 4-piece, and every model is fast except the 595-4, a medium-fast 9'5" 5 wt. We carry all nine.

G. Loomis NRX+ Models
NRX+ 490-4 - 9' 4 wt
The lightest NRX+ is a general trout rod for dry flies and light nymph rigs. It has the series' fast action and quick recovery in a 4 wt, so it stays accurate at distance and still protects light tippet up close. The reel seat has a walnut insert.
Best for: dry flies, light nymphing, small to medium rivers.
Line pairing: A 4 wt trout taper. We recommend the SA Amplitude Smooth Trout Expert (WF4F) or the SA Amplitude Smooth MPX (WF4F).
NRX+ 4100-4 - 10' 4 wt
A 10-foot 4 wt for indicator and euro-style nymphing that also fishes dry flies well. The length gives you reach for mending and line control at distance, the tip protects tippet down to 6X, and open loops help keep two-fly rigs from tangling. Reviewers note it bridges the 4 and 5 wt classes. It has a small fighting butt.
Best for: indicator and euro-style nymphing, mending at distance, dry flies.
Line pairing: A 4 wt trout line; some anglers go up a size for short nymphing work. We recommend the SA Amplitude Smooth Infinity (WF4F) or the SA Amplitude Smooth Trout Expert (WF4F).
NRX+ 590-4 - 9' 5 wt
The all-round NRX+ for trout. Reviewers single it out for accuracy and light weight, at home with small dries on 5X and 6X tippet and just as capable with big hoppers, stoneflies and dry-dropper rigs on windy days. The reel seat has a dark walnut insert.
Best for: one rod for most trout water, dry flies, hoppers and dry-droppers.
Line pairing: A 5 wt trout taper. We recommend the SA Amplitude Smooth Infinity (WF5F) or the SA Amplitude Smooth MPX (WF5F).
NRX+ 595-4 - 9'5" 5 wt
The only medium-fast rod in the freshwater NRX+. The softer action protects light tippet on tailwaters, roll casts easily and suits nymphing from a float tube or on stillwater. It shines at about 30 to 50 feet; its loops are less precise than the 590-4's, so it is not a dedicated dry-fly rod. The reel seat has a walnut insert.
Best for: tailwater nymphing, stillwater, roll casting.
Line pairing: A 5 wt all-round or trout taper. We recommend the SA Amplitude Smooth Infinity (WF5F) or the SA Amplitude Textured Infinity (WF5F).
NRX+ 5100-4 - 10' 5 wt
A 10-foot 5 wt with a fighting butt, built around reach. The extra length makes mending and line control easier on bigger rivers and gives you more lift when nymphing or fishing stillwater.
Best for: nymphing big rivers, mending, stillwater.
Line pairing: A 5 wt floating or stillwater line. We recommend the SA Amplitude Smooth Infinity (WF5F) or the SA Stillwater Float (WF5F).
NRX+ 690-4 - 9' 6 wt
The step up for streamers, big dries and hoppers, windy days, bass and larger trout. It has a fighting butt.
Best for: streamers, wind, bass, big trout.
Line pairing: A 6 wt all-round or streamer taper. We recommend the SA Amplitude Smooth Infinity (WF6F) or the SA Amplitude Smooth MPX (WF6F).
NRX+ 6100-4 - 10' 6 wt
A 10-foot 6 wt with a fighting butt for big-river nymphing and streamers, stillwater, and keeping line control at distance.
Best for: big-river nymphing, streamers, stillwater.
Line pairing: A 6 wt floating or intermediate line. We recommend the SA Amplitude Smooth Infinity (WF6F) or the SA Amplitude Smooth MPX (WF6F).
NRX+ 7100-4 - 10' 7 wt
A single-hand 10-foot 7 wt for steelhead and salmon, lake fishing and heavier streamers, where the extra length helps with line control and lift.
Best for: steelhead, lakes, heavy streamers.
Line pairing: A 7 wt all-purpose or anadromous taper. We recommend the SA Amplitude Smooth Anadro (WF7F) or the SA Amplitude Smooth Titan Long Taper (WF7F).
NRX+ 8100-4 - 10' 8 wt
The heaviest freshwater NRX+, a 10-foot 8 wt for steelhead and salmon, large streamers and big water.
Best for: steelhead and salmon, big streamers, big water.
Line pairing: An 8 wt all-purpose or streamer taper. We recommend the SA Amplitude Smooth Infinity (WF8F) or the SA Amplitude Smooth Titan Long Taper (WF8F).
NRX+ vs Other G. Loomis Fly Rods
The G. Loomis NRX+ Salt is the saltwater version: 9' only, 7 to 12 wt, with a full wells grip and fighting butt on every model. If you want a 9' 7 or 8 wt NRX+, that is where you will find it. The G. Loomis NRX+ LP is the slower, more delicate dry-fly version in 3 to 6 wt, with cigar or half wells grips and an amboyna reel seat insert.
Above the NRX+ sits the G. Loomis Asquith, the flagship series with a Spiral X Core blank. Below it, the G. Loomis IMX-PRO V2 is the value line, also built in Woodland.
