Description

Overview

The Redington Wrangler is a 4-piece fly rod made for anglers of any level, from a first serious rod to a dependable everyday stick. Since its launch in 2023, Redington has tuned each line weight in the series for the fish and water it is meant for, all on a medium-fast action blank.

The blank is finished in gloss grey with charcoal trim wraps, with alignment dots for quick setup and the line weight laser etched on the anodized aluminum reel seat. Every Wrangler ships in a protective nylon tube with divided liners. We carry three 9' models: a 4 wt, a 6 wt, and a 6 wt with a fighting butt.

Which Wrangler Should You Choose?

Creeks, ponds, panfish and small trout: 5-5038T-490-4 (9' 4 wt).

Bigger trout, streamers, bushy dries and windy days: 5-5038T-690-4 (9' 6 wt).

The same 6 wt work with a fighting butt to brace against on bigger fish: 5-5038T-690-4S (9' 6 wt with fighting butt).

Redington Wrangler Models

5-5038T-490-4 - 9' 4 wt

The light Wrangler, aimed at small water: creeks and ponds where you are after trout, bluegill, crappie, perch and small bass.

Best for: creeks, ponds, panfish and small trout.

Line pairing: A 4 wt weight-forward floating trout line. We recommend the SA Amplitude Smooth Trout Expert (WF4F) or the SA Amplitude Smooth Infinity (WF4F).

5-5038T-690-4 - 9' 6 wt

The 6 wt without a fighting butt. It has the extra power to throw meaty streamers and bushy dry flies, handle larger trout and keep casting when the wind picks up.

Best for: bigger trout, streamers, large dry flies, windy conditions.

Line pairing: A 6 wt weight-forward floating line. We recommend the SA Amplitude Smooth Infinity (WF6F) or the SA Amplitude Textured Trout Expert (WF6F).

5-5038T-690-4S - 9' 6 wt

The same 6 wt Wrangler with an added fighting butt, the "S" in the model code. The butt gives you something to brace against your body while you play a heavier fish, which helps on big trout and streamer days.

Best for: trophy trout, streamers, anglers who like a fighting butt.

Line pairing: A 6 wt weight-forward floating line, or a long-head taper for bigger flies. We recommend the SA Amplitude Smooth Titan Long Taper (WF6F) or the SA Amplitude Smooth Infinity (WF6F).

Wrangler Rod vs Wrangler Kit

The Wrangler rod is also sold as the Redington Wrangler Kit, which adds a Crosswater reel, backing, a RIO Mainstream fly line and a RIO tapered leader, all packed in a nylon case that holds the rod and reel together. The rod on its own ships in a divided nylon tube with no room for a reel, so it is the better buy if you already own a reel you like. For other Redington fly rods, see the Redington Vice and the Redington Classic Trout.

Redington Wrangler FAQ

What action is the Wrangler?

Medium-fast. Redington tunes each line weight for the species and fishing it is designed for.

What does the "S" in 690-4S mean?

It marks the fighting butt version of the 9' 6 wt. The 690-4 is the same weight and length without the fighting butt.

Does it come with a case?

Yes. Every Wrangler rod ships in a protective nylon tube with divided liners. The Wrangler Kit comes in a nylon case that also holds the reel.

What is the warranty?

The Wrangler is covered by Redington's original-owner warranty against defects in materials and workmanship.

Which weight should I choose?

The 4 wt for creeks, ponds and panfish, and the 6 wt for bigger trout, streamers and wind. Choose the 690-4S if you want a fighting butt on your 6 wt.
