Overview

The Redington Classic Trout is a moderate-action fly rod built for trout fishing from start to finish. Its smooth stroke gives you the touch to lay small dries down softly and protect light tippets on technical spring creeks, and there is still enough power in the butt for big rivers and fishing from a boat. A light blank and a forgiving action keep your casting arm fresh through a long day.

The look is traditional, with a dark clay brown blank, a matching rosewood reel seat insert, custom machined reel seat hardware, titanium oxide stripping guides and alignment dots for quick setup. Every model is 4-piece and comes in a divided brown ballistic nylon rod tube. We carry all nine models in the current lineup, from a 7'6" 2 wt to a 9' 6 wt.

Which Classic Trout Should You Choose?

Tiny streams and small trout that need a delicate presentation: 5-5016T-276-4 (7'6" 2 wt).

Small creeks and short, tight-loop casts: 5-5016T-376-4 (7'6" 3 wt).

Light lines on pocketwater, with reach to keep line off the water: 5-5016T-386-4 (8'6" 3 wt).

Accurate dry fly casting to spooky spring creek trout: 5-5016T-480-4 (8' 4 wt), or 5-5016T-486-4 (8'6" 4 wt) for a little more reach.

Dries and light nymphs in clear water: 5-5016T-490-4 (9' 4 wt).

A light, quick-loading rod for dries, small nymphs and small streamers: 5-5016T-586-4 (8'6" 5 wt).

One rod for nearly all trout fishing: 5-5016T-590-4 (9' 5 wt).

Big bushy dries and moderate wind: 5-5016T-690-4 (9' 6 wt).

Redington Classic Trout Models

5-5016T-276-4 - 7'6" 2 wt

The lightest Classic Trout, for tiny streams and small fish where the presentation matters more than the distance.

Best for: tiny streams, small trout, delicate presentations.

Line pairing: A 2 wt floating line, double taper or a short-range weight-forward taper for soft, close casts. We recommend the SA Amplitude Textured Double Taper (DT2F) or the SA Mastery Double Taper (DT2F).

5-5016T-376-4 - 7'6" 3 wt

A short 3 wt for small creeks and smaller fish, where a tight loop and a short, accurate cast matter most.

Best for: small creeks, smaller fish, short accurate casts.

Line pairing: A 3 wt floating creek or double-taper line that loads the rod at short range. We recommend the SA Amplitude Smooth Creek Trout (WF3F) or the SA Amplitude Textured Double Taper (DT3F).

5-5016T-386-4 - 8'6" 3 wt

The longer 3 wt keeps a light line but adds reach, so you can keep more line off the water on pocketwater streams.

Best for: pocketwater, light line fishing with extra reach.

Line pairing: A 3 wt weight-forward or double-taper floating trout line. We recommend the SA Amplitude Smooth Trout GP (WF3F) or the SA Amplitude Textured Double Taper (DT3F).

5-5016T-480-4 - 8' 4 wt

An 8' 4 wt built around dry fly accuracy, with a crisp recovery that helps you place a fly in front of spooky spring creek trout.

Best for: accurate dry fly casting, spring creeks.

Line pairing: A 4 wt weight-forward or double-taper floating trout line. We recommend the SA Amplitude Smooth Trout Expert (WF4F) or the RIO Elite Gold (WF4F).

5-5016T-486-4 - 8'6" 4 wt

The same dry fly focus as the 8' 4 wt with an extra six inches for more reach on spring creeks.

Best for: spring creek dries, more reach than the 8'.

Line pairing: A 4 wt weight-forward or double-taper floating trout line. We recommend the SA Amplitude Smooth Trout Expert (WF4F) or the RIO Elite Gold (WF4F).

5-5016T-490-4 - 9' 4 wt

A 9' 4 wt for dries and light nymph rigs in clear water. The moderate action cushions light tippets when a good fish turns.

Best for: dries and light nymphs, spooky trout in clear water.

Line pairing: A 4 wt weight-forward floating trout line. We recommend the SA Amplitude Smooth Trout Expert (WF4F) or the RIO Elite Gold (WF4F).

5-5016T-586-4 - 8'6" 5 wt

A shorter 5 wt that loads quickly and feels light in the hand, for dries, small nymphs and small streamers.

Best for: dries, small nymphs, small streamers.

Line pairing: A 5 wt weight-forward floating trout line. We recommend the SA Amplitude Textured Trout Expert (WF5F) or the RIO Elite Technical Trout (WF5F).

5-5016T-590-4 - 9' 5 wt

The all-around Classic Trout and the one to pick if you will own just one. It handles dries, nymph and indicator rigs and woolly buggers on most trout water.

Best for: all-around trout fishing.

Line pairing: A 5 wt weight-forward floating trout line. We recommend the SA Amplitude Textured Trout Expert (WF5F) or the RIO Elite Technical Trout (WF5F).

5-5016T-690-4 - 9' 6 wt

The heaviest Classic Trout, with the power to turn over big bushy dries and handle a moderate wind in nearly any classic trout situation.

Best for: big bushy dries, moderate wind, general trout fishing.

Line pairing: A 6 wt weight-forward floating line. We recommend the SA Amplitude Smooth Infinity (WF6F) or the SA Amplitude Smooth Trout GP (WF6F).

Classic Trout Rod vs Classic Trout Kit

The 7'6" 3 wt and 9' 5 wt Classic Trout rods are also sold as the Redington Classic Trout Kit, which adds the Classic Trout click and pawl reel, RIO Gold XP fly line and a Cordura case. Buy the rod alone if you already have a reel, or if you want one of the other seven sizes. For a fiberglass rod with a classic medium action, see the Redington Butter Stick. For other Redington fly rods, see the Redington Vice.

Redington Classic Trout FAQ

What action is the Classic Trout?

Moderate. It is soft enough for delicate presentations and light tippets, with enough power for bigger rivers and boat fishing.

Does it come with a case?

Yes. Every Classic Trout comes in a divided brown ballistic nylon rod tube.

What is the warranty?

The Classic Trout is covered by Redington's original-owner warranty against defects in materials and workmanship.

Which weight should I choose?

The 9' 5 wt for most trout fishing, a 2 or 3 wt for small streams, a 4 wt for spring creeks and dry flies, and the 9' 6 wt for big dries and wind.

How is the rod different from the Classic Trout Kit?

The kit uses the same 7'6" 3 wt or 9' 5 wt rod and adds a matched click and pawl reel, RIO Gold XP fly line and a Cordura case. The rod on its own comes with its rod tube and is offered in nine sizes.
