Overview

The Redington Wrangler Kit is a complete fly fishing outfit: a Wrangler rod, a Crosswater reel, backing, a RIO fly line and a RIO leader in one box. Redington names each kit for what it does best, and we carry the Pond (4 wt), Trout (5 wt) and Trout XL (6 wt). Launched in 2023, it gets an angler of any level on the water with matched gear from day one.

The rod is the same 9' 4-piece medium-fast Wrangler sold on its own, with a gloss grey blank and the kit name and line weight printed on the anodized aluminum reel seat. The Crosswater reel has a carbon disc drag, and the RIO Mainstream line has a slightly heavier, shorter head that makes it easy to cast and helps it cut through wind. Everything packs into a nylon case that holds the rod and reel together.

Best for: ponds, creeks, panfish and small trout.

5-5037K-590-4 - 9' 5 wt

The Trout Kit, the classic all-around trout size for dry flies, nymphs, woolly buggers and indicator rigs. In the box: the 9' 5 wt Wrangler rod, Crosswater 4/5/6 reel, backing, RIO Mainstream WF5F line, RIO Powerflex Plus 4x leader and the nylon rod and reel case.

Best for: everyday trout fishing on most rivers and streams.

5-5037K-690-4 - 9' 6 wt

The Trout XL Kit adds power for big trout, meaty streamers, bushy dries and windy days, and it is the better pick over the 5 wt if you fish heavy multi-fly rigs. In the box: the 9' 6 wt Wrangler rod, Crosswater 4/5/6 reel, backing, RIO Mainstream WF6F line, RIO Powerflex Plus 4x leader and the nylon rod and reel case.

Best for: bigger trout, streamers, heavier rigs, wind.

Wrangler Kit vs Wrangler Rod

The kit uses the same rod as the Redington Wrangler Rod, which comes on its own in a divided nylon tube. The kit adds the Crosswater reel, backing, line and leader, and its case holds the rod and reel together. If you already own a reel and line, the rod alone is the simpler buy. Redington also makes the Redington Original Kit and the Redington Classic Trout Kit.

Is the Wrangler Kit good for beginners?

Yes. The medium-fast rod is easy to cast for anglers of any level, and the RIO Mainstream line is made for newer casters.
