Overview

The Redington Butter Stick is a fiberglass fly rod with a deliberate 1970s feel, for anglers who want a classic glass casting stroke on small water. The current third version (v3) uses T-glass construction, which Redington says improves strength and casting feel compared with other glass rods, and Redington's Heritage Design, a classic medium action inspired by vintage fiberglass rods. The v3 is also the first Butter Stick in 4 pieces.

It is easy to spot on the water: a semi-translucent Sunshine Yellow blank, a traditional half wells cork grip and a cork reel seat with a threaded lock nut, plus alignment dots for lining up the guides. It comes in a matching Cordura rod case. It suits blue-line brook trout streams, dry flies on tailwaters and the local bass pond. We carry the 7' 3 wt and the 7'6" 4 wt.

Which Butter Stick Should You Choose?

Small creeks to high alpine lakes, with a bit more reach without overpowering small native trout: 5-5036T-370-4 (7' 3 wt).

The go-to Butter Stick, for dry flies on larger water that is still easy to handle on a small creek: 5-5036T-476-4 (7'6" 4 wt).

Redington Butter Stick Models

5-5036T-370-4 - 7' 3 wt

The light Butter Stick, at home anywhere from small eastern creeks to high alpine lakes in the West. The 7' length gives a little more reach than a very short rod while the 3 wt glass stays gentle on small native trout.

Best for: small creeks, alpine lakes, small native trout.

Line pairing: A true-to-weight 3 wt floating line with its mass close to the front, such as a creek taper or a double taper. We recommend the SA Amplitude Textured Double Taper (DT3F) or the SA Amplitude Smooth Creek Trout (WF3F).

5-5036T-476-4 - 7'6" 4 wt

Redington calls the 476-4 the go-to rod in the Butter Stick family. It has enough length and line weight for dry flies on larger water without feeling clumsy on a small creek, and it is at home on a bass pond too.

Best for: dry flies on larger water, small creeks, ponds.

Line pairing: A true-to-weight 4 wt floating line with its mass close to the front, such as a creek taper or a double taper. We recommend the SA Amplitude Textured Double Taper (DT4F) or the SA Amplitude Smooth Creek Trout (WF4F).

Butter Stick vs Other Redington Rods

The Butter Stick is Redington's fiberglass option, with a classic medium action and short lengths for small water. For a moderate-action trout rod in more sizes, from a 7'6" 2 wt to a 9' 6 wt, see the Redington Classic Trout, also sold as the Redington Classic Trout Kit.
