Description
Overview
The Scott Session is a fast-action fly rod handcrafted in Montrose, Colorado, built to cover most of what a trout angler runs into in a season with one rod. Scott calls the action "fast with feel": high line speed and tight loops when you need distance or have to punch into wind, but a light, lively tip that still lets you feel short casts and protect fine tippet.
That wide performance range is the point of the series. A single Session handles dries, nymph rigs and streamers at close and long range without feeling like the wrong tool for any of them. The 11 models run from an 8' 3 wt small-stream rod to a 10' 5 wt for lakes and technical nymphing, all in 4-piece configurations that pack down for travel.
Which Session Should You Choose?
Small streams and dry flies: SE8034 (8' 3 wt) or SE8544 (8'6" 4 wt).
One rod for most trout water: SE9054 (9' 5 wt), or SE9554 (9'6" 5 wt) if you want extra reach for mending and roll casts.
Nymphing: SE10044 (10' 4 wt) for technical, light-line work, or SE10054 (10' 5 wt) for high-sticking and stillwater.
Big rivers, hoppers and streamers: SE9064 (9' 6 wt) or SE9564 (9'6" 6 wt).
Big streamers, bass, carp and light salt: SE9074 (9' 7 wt) or SE9084 (9' 8 wt).

Scott Session Models
SE8034 - 8' 3 wt
The lightest rod in the series and a natural fit for creeks and small streams, where casts are short and overhanging brush leaves little room for a backcast. Its butt section is slightly softer than the rest of the Session lineup, so it loads easily with only a few feet of line out and makes accurate, delicate presentations out to about 45 feet. It can still carry a light dry-dropper or small nymph rig, and it doubles as a fun rod for panfish with small poppers.
Best for: small-stream trout, dry flies, light dry-dropper rigs, panfish.
Line pairing: Recommended line weight 95-110 grains. We recommend the SA Amplitude Smooth Trout GP (WF3F) or the SA Amplitude Smooth Creek Trout (WF3F).
SE8544 - 8'6" 4 wt
A touch quicker and stiffer than the 803 and the 904, the 854 likes a slightly faster casting rhythm and does its best work inside 60 feet. That makes it a strong choice for small to medium rivers where most fish are taken at moderate range, with enough backbone for dry-droppers and short nymph rigs as well as single dries on light tippet. Because the blank is light and responsive, a true-to-weight line is the better match; a heavy line can overpower it.
Best for: small to medium trout rivers, dry flies on light tippet, dry-dropper rigs.
Line pairing: Recommended line weight 115-130 grains. We recommend the SA Amplitude Smooth Trout Expert (WF4F) or the RIO Elite Technical Trout (WF4F).
SE9044 - 9' 4 wt
A light, smooth all-rounder that holds its own against far more expensive 4 weights. A slender blank, thin wire guides and a well-shaped grip keep it feather-light in hand. The action is fast, but it flexes deep enough for a relaxed casting stroke, then recovers quickly to throw tight loops and turn over long leaders in wind. It is equally at home with dries, dry-droppers and light nymph rigs, from close range out to longer casts.
Best for: all-round trout fishing with smaller flies and light tippet, spring creeks, wind-prone water.
Line pairing: Recommended line weight 120-135 grains. We recommend the SA Amplitude Smooth Trout Expert (WF4F) or the RIO Elite Gold (WF4F).
SE10044 - 10' 4 wt
Built for technical nymphing, with or without an indicator. It has a more moderate feel than the rest of the series and a deliberate casting rhythm, because its real job happens after the cast: reaching over current seams, managing drifts and detecting light takes through the soft, sensitive tip. It is stable enough at the tip for European-style nymphing while remaining a true fly rod, so it can still cast a conventional line and a dry fly when fish start rising.
Best for: tight-line and Euro-style nymphing, indicator nymphing, anglers who want one rod for both nymphing and dries.
Line pairing: Recommended line weight 120-135 grains. We recommend the SA Amplitude Smooth Trout Expert (WF4F) or the SA Mastery Euro Tactical Nymph (0.022 in level).
SE9054 - 9' 5 wt
The classic western trout rod and the Session most anglers should start with. An even-flexing taper loads and unloads with a natural casting stroke, so it is forgiving for newer casters without holding back experienced ones. It has the power to fish a nymph rig or small streamer and the feel to lay down a dry fly softly, and the sensitive tip helps protect light tippet when a fish runs. If you only own one trout rod, this is the one to own.
Best for: do-it-all trout fishing, first serious fly rod, switching between dries, nymphs and small streamers.
Line pairing: Recommended line weight 140-155 grains. We recommend the SA Amplitude Smooth Infinity (WF5F) or the RIO Elite Gold (WF5F).
SE9554 - 9'6" 5 wt
The extra six inches give you more line control without the weight or swing of a 10-foot rod. That length pays off for long roll casts, big mends, single-hand spey casts and high-sticking from a distance. In power it sits between the 905 and the 906, with enough touch for big dry flies and enough low-end strength for heavier indicator rigs. Loops stay tight at every distance, and it holds a long line in the air without effort. It comes with a fighting butt.
Best for: anglers who want one 5 weight with more reach, mending on big rivers, roll and spey casting, dries to indicator rigs.
Line pairing: Recommended line weight 140-155 grains. We recommend the SA Amplitude Smooth Infinity (WF5F) or the RIO Elite Gold (WF5F).
SE10054 - 10' 5 wt
A 10-foot 5 weight for stillwater specialists and big-river nymphing. It is stronger than the 1004 and casts more like a traditional trout rod, comfortable with floating, intermediate and sinking lines. The length helps with deep wading, high-stick nymphing, roll casting and keeping a long leader under control, and it is a strong choice for chironomid and indicator fishing on lakes. It rewards a long, unhurried casting stroke and a long-headed line.
Best for: lake fishing with floating, intermediate and sinking lines, chironomids, high-stick and indicator nymphing on big rivers.
Line pairing: Recommended line weight 145-160 grains. We recommend the SA Amplitude Smooth Infinity (WF5F) or the SA Stillwater Intermediate (WF5I).
SE9064 - 9' 6 wt
A middle-of-the-road 6 weight in the best sense: not the stiffest rod in its class and not the softest, with a flex profile close to the 905 and more power behind it. That extra power helps with wind-resistant hoppers, stoneflies and heavier nymph and indicator rigs, and it roll casts well. Matched with the right line it handles streamer duty too, which makes it a good choice for a day floating a bigger river and casting to the banks.
Best for: larger rivers and lakes, hopper-dropper rigs, stoneflies, indicator nymphing, light streamer work.
Line pairing: Recommended line weight 160-185 grains. We recommend the SA Amplitude Smooth Infinity (WF6F) or the SA Sonar Titan Sink Tip Sink 3 (WF6F).
SE9564 - 9'6" 6 wt
A powerful, rangy 6 weight for larger rivers and lakes that still feels light and stable in hand. It tracks straight and throws long, effortless loops, and it has the strength to cast sinking lines and swing flies while keeping a supple tip for detecting strikes. The length makes aggressive stack mends and long roll casts easy, which is why it is a favorite for heavy western rivers and stillwater.
Best for: streamer fishing, swinging flies, big western rivers, stillwater with sinking lines.
Line pairing: Recommended line weight 160-185 grains. We recommend the SA Amplitude Smooth Infinity (WF6F) or the SA Sonar Stillwater Seamless Density I/S3 (WF6S).
SE9074 - 9' 7 wt
A fast, even-flexing 7 weight that is lighter in hand than its line rating suggests: it casts with the ease of a 5 weight and has the pulling power of a classic 7. Line speed and accuracy hold up from short range to the far bank, with floating or sinking lines. It is a strong streamer rod for big trout and a capable crossover rod for smallmouth, carp, half-pounder steelhead, sockeye and redfish.
Best for: streamer fishing for big trout, smallmouth, carp, big-water nymphing, light saltwater.
Line pairing: Recommended line weight 185-210 grains. We recommend the SA Amplitude Smooth Infinity (WF7F) or the SA Sonar Titan Sink Tip Sink 3 (WF7F).
SE9084 - 9' 8 wt
Scott avoided the overbuilt feel that many 8 weights have, so this rod stays smooth and approachable while still holding a tight loop at distance. It has the lifting power for big flies and big fish: large trout, Pacific salmon, pike, carp and largemouth bass, plus bonefish and redfish on a saltwater trip. It works with a wide range of lines, from standard trout tapers to aggressive bass and predator heads for turning over big, bushy bugs.
Best for: bass and pike, carp, Alaska and Pacific salmon, large streamers, grab-and-go light saltwater.
Line pairing: Recommended line weight 210-230 grains. We recommend the SA Amplitude Smooth Titan Long Taper (WF8F) or the SA Amplitude Textured Bass Bug (WF8F).
Session vs Centric vs Wave
Scott builds several fast-action graphite series, and the three most often compared are the Session, the Centric and the Wave.
Session is Scott's versatile all-water series for trout and freshwater, 3 to 8 weight in lengths from 8 to 10 feet. It gives you most of the feel and performance of Scott's top rods at a lower price, which makes it the best value in the lineup for anglers who fish a wide range of water.
Scott Centric is Scott's premium fast-action series. It shares the Session's focus on trout and freshwater, but adds Scott's newest tapers and resin, Flor grade cork, titanium stripping guides with zirconia inserts and a fully milled reel seat. Centric rods are a little more stable and efficient at distance, and they cost more. Choose the Centric if you want Scott's best freshwater rod; choose the Session if you want most of that performance for less.
Scott Wave is built for power: 6 to 12 weight, all 9 feet, for saltwater flats, stripers, big bass and other strong fish. Choose the Wave if you are fishing heavy lines and big flies; choose the Session for trout and most freshwater fishing. The SE9074 and SE9084 overlap with the lighter Wave models for anglers who split time between trout streamers, bass and an occasional saltwater trip.
Scott Session FAQ
Is the Scott Session a fast action rod?
Yes. Scott describes the Session as "fast with feel": fast enough for high line speed and tight loops, with a tip that stays lively and sensitive at short range. Most models flex deeper than a stiff fast rod, so they are comfortable for a wide range of casters. The 10' 4 wt (SE10044) is the most moderate of the series, by design, for nymphing.
Which Scott Session is best for trout?
The SE9054 (9' 5 wt) is the best all-round trout model. Choose the SE9554 (9'6" 5 wt) for more reach and mending control on big rivers, the SE9044 (9' 4 wt) for lighter flies and tippet, or the SE8034 (8' 3 wt) for small streams.
Which Scott Session is best for nymphing?
The SE10044 (10' 4 wt) is built for technical and Euro-style nymphing, with a soft, sensitive tip for strike detection. The SE10054 (10' 5 wt) is the better choice for indicator and high-stick nymphing on big rivers and for stillwater.
What fly line should I use on a Scott Session?
Use the recommended grain range for your model in the spec table above. Each model section lists two lines we recommend and stock in the right weight. A true-to-weight trout taper suits most models; longer-headed lines work well on the 9'6" and 10' rods.
Where are Scott Session rods made?
Session rods are designed and handcrafted by Scott in Montrose, Colorado.
What warranty comes with the Scott Session?

Does the Session come with a rod tube?
Yes. Each Session ships with a partitioned cloth liner and a Cordura-covered travel case.
