Overview
The Douglas SKY G is the rod reviewers call the Douglas flagship, and it earned that name by being light in the hand and easy to cast. The moderate-fast action casts with little effort, and testers single out its low swing weight. Per Douglas, the 9' 5 wt took Best Overall in a Yellowstone Angler 5 wt shootout, and the 9' 8 wt was named Field & Stream's Best Overall Saltwater Fly Rod for 2023.
The multi-modulus graphite blank is built with G-Tec, graphene platelets mixed into the resin that binds the fibers, which Douglas says makes the blank lighter, quicker to recover and more durable. A G-Armour coating cuts glare on the water, and alignment dots on each section show the line weight. Every SKY G here is 4-piece, with a cork grip, and ships in a powder-coated aluminum rod tube with a plush rod sock. We carry nine models: 9' rods from 4 to 8 wt and three 10' Euro nymphing rods in 2, 3 and 4 wt.
Which SKY G Should You Choose?
Spring creeks, small tailwaters, technical dry flies on long leaders: SKY G 4904 (9' 4 wt).

Bigger trout and smallmouth, foam dries, nymph rigs and streamers in wind: SKY G 6904 (9' 6 wt, Handle A without the fighting butt).
Light-line saltwater fishing for bonefish, snook and redfish at close range: SKY G S6904 (9' 6 wt, Handle B with the fighting butt).

Steelhead, salmon, bass, carp and pike, big streamers, or bonefish and permit: SKY G 8904 (9' 8 wt).
Euro nymphing: SKY G 2104 (10' 2 wt) for the lightest tippet and small water, SKY G 3104 (10' 3 wt) for tailwaters, spring creeks and pocket water, SKY G 4104 (10' 4 wt) when you want the most line weight of the three.

Douglas SKY G Models
SKY G 2104 - 10' 2 wt
The softest SKY G, a 10' Euro nymphing rod for technical tight-line work with very light tippet in pocket water and small streams. Its soft action protects fine tippet. It weighs about 3.2 oz and has the Handle C grip.
Best for: Euro nymphing with light tippet, small streams, pocket water.
Line pairing: A thin Euro nymphing line; a 2 wt floating line covers the times you want to switch to a dry. We recommend the SA Mastery Euro Tactical Nymph (0.022 in level) or the SA Amplitude Smooth Trout Expert (WF2F).
SKY G 3104 - 10' 3 wt
The middle of the three Euro rods, aimed at technical light-line nymphing on tailwaters, spring creeks and pocket water. It weighs about 3.2 oz and has the Handle C grip.
Best for: Euro nymphing on tailwaters, spring creeks and pocket water.
Line pairing: A thin Euro nymphing line, or a 3 wt floating trout line. We recommend the SA Mastery Euro Tactical Nymph (0.022 in level) or the SA Amplitude Textured Trout Expert (WF3F).
SKY G 4904 - 9' 4 wt
The light 9' SKY G, for technical trout water where accuracy and a delicate landing matter: dries and emergers on long leaders, small dry-dropper rigs and light nymphing on spring creeks, small tailwaters and high lakes. Douglas pitches it for accuracy from about 15 to 50 feet, and it still has the backbone to throw a light streamer.
Best for: spring creeks, small tailwaters, dry flies, light nymphing.
Line pairing: A 4 wt weight-forward floating trout line. We recommend the SA Amplitude Smooth Trout Expert (WF4F) or the SA Amplitude Smooth MPX (WF4F).
SKY G 4104 - 10' 4 wt
The 4 wt of the three 10' Euro nymphing models, with the most line weight of the three. It weighs about 3.2 oz and has the Handle C grip.
Best for: Euro nymphing when you want a 4 wt.
Line pairing: A thin Euro nymphing line, or a 4 wt floating line for dries and indicator rigs. We recommend the SA Mastery Euro Tactical Nymph (0.022 in level) or the SA Amplitude Smooth Trout Expert (WF4F).
SKY G 5904 - 9' 5 wt
The original SKY G size and the shootout winner. It casts dries with finesse, handles dry-dropper rigs in the wind and has the power for nymphing and light streamers. Reviewers praise its low swing weight and how easy it is to cast from about 15 to 50 feet. It weighs about 2.7 oz and has the Handle A grip, a reversed half-Wells cork shape with no fighting butt.
Best for: one rod for most trout water, dry flies, dry-dropper, nymphing.
Line pairing: A 5 wt weight-forward floating trout line; reviewers like SA Amplitude MPX and Mastery MPX on it. We recommend the SA Amplitude Smooth Infinity (WF5F) or the SA Amplitude Smooth MPX (WF5F).
SKY G 6904 - 9' 6 wt
The freshwater 6 wt, with more power than the 5 wt but still light in hand at about 2.8 oz. It handles bigger trout and smallmouth bass, big foam dries, heavier nymph rigs and streamers, and it stays composed when the wind comes up. It has the Handle A grip with no fighting butt.
Best for: bigger trout, smallmouth, foam dries, streamers, windy days.
Line pairing: A 6 wt weight-forward floating line. We recommend the SA Amplitude Smooth Infinity (WF6F) or the SA Amplitude Smooth MPX (WF6F).
SKY G S6904 - 9' 6 wt
Retailers list the S6904 as the saltwater version of the 6 wt. It is softer than the freshwater 6904, with a noticeably soft tip, which suits close-range, finesse shots at bonefish, snook and redfish. It weighs about 3.3 oz and has the Handle B grip, a full Wells cork shape with a short cork fighting butt. It is a different rod from the 6904, not just a different grip.
Best for: light-line saltwater, bonefish, snook and redfish at close range.
Line pairing: A 6 wt weight-forward floating line; reviewers find SA Mastery MPX too heavy for it. We recommend the SA Amplitude Smooth Infinity (WF6F) or the SA Amplitude Smooth Titan Long Taper (WF6F).
SKY G 7904 - 9' 7 wt
A step up in power, for big trout, bass, steelhead and small salmon, heavy streamers, weighted nymph rigs and windy days. It weighs about 3.5 oz and has the Handle B grip with a short fighting butt.
Best for: big trout and bass, streamers, steelhead and small salmon.
Line pairing: A 7 wt weight-forward floating line. We recommend the SA Amplitude Smooth Infinity (WF7F) or the SA Amplitude Textured Bass Bug (WF7F).
SKY G 8904 - 9' 8 wt
Douglas aims the 8 wt at steelhead, salmon, bass, carp and pike and the big streamers that go with them, and the same rod was named Field & Stream's Best Overall Saltwater Fly Rod for 2023. Reviewers call it fast but not too fast. It weighs about 3.6 oz and has the Handle B grip with a short fighting butt.
Best for: steelhead, salmon, bass, carp, pike, big streamers, bonefish and permit.
Line pairing: An 8 wt weight-forward floating line; a long-head freshwater taper for streamers, or a bonefish taper in salt water. We recommend the SA Amplitude Smooth Titan Long Taper (WF8F) or the SA Amplitude Smooth Infinity (WF8F).
SKY G vs Other Douglas Fly Rods
The SKY G sits at the top of the Douglas rods we carry. Douglas positions the Douglas DXF Gen 2 below the SKY G in price, with a different look and feel, and the Douglas ERA as its budget rod for anglers who want the Douglas name. For Euro nymphing on a budget, Douglas points to its LRS 10' 3 and 4 wt models as alternatives to the SKY G Euro rods.
Douglas SKY G FAQ
What action is the SKY G?
Moderate-fast, with a low swing weight.
What do Handle A, B and C mean?
Douglas labels its SKY G grips by letter. Going by the Douglas photos, Handle A is a reversed half-Wells cork grip with no fighting butt (the 9' 4, 5 and 6 wt), Handle B is a full Wells cork grip with a short cork fighting butt (the 9' S6904 6 wt, 7 wt and 8 wt), and Handle C is the grip on the 10' Euro nymphing rods.
What is the difference between the two 6 wt rods?
The SKY G 6904 (Handle A) is the freshwater 6 wt. The SKY G S6904 (Handle B, fighting butt) is listed by retailers as the saltwater 6 wt and has a softer tip.
Does it come with a case?
Yes, a powder-coated aluminum rod tube with a plush rod sock.
What is the warranty?
Douglas covers its fly rods with a limited lifetime warranty for the original owner against manufacturing defects, with proof of purchase. Register the rod with Douglas so defect claims are handled at no charge.
Which weight should I choose?
The 9' 5 wt for most trout fishing, the 4 wt for technical water, the 6 wt for bigger flies and wind, the 7 or 8 wt for bass, steelhead, salmon and streamers. For Euro nymphing, pick the 10' 2, 3 or 4 wt by the size of your flies and water.
