Description

Overview

The Douglas ERA is the most affordable way into a Douglas fly rod. Douglas pitches it as a first rod for new anglers or a solid backup for experienced ones, and the medium-fast action is easy to time at the short and middle distances where most fish are caught, while still turning over a leader cleanly.

The graphite blank is finished in grey with white trim, matched to a cork grip, a black metal reel seat and lightweight guides. Every ERA is 4-piece and ships in a Cordura tube with an integrated rod sleeve. Douglas makes four ERA fly rods from 4 to 8 wt; we carry the 9' 5 wt and the 9' 8 wt.

Which ERA Should You Choose?

Trout on rivers, streams and lakes, from dry flies to nymph rigs and small streamers: ERA F5904 (9' 5 wt, Handle A).

Bass, steelhead and salmon, big streamers, heavy nymph rigs and wind-resistant flies: ERA F8904 (9' 8 wt, Handle B with fighting butt).

Douglas ERA Models

ERA F5904 - 9' 5 wt

The all-round trout ERA, built for dry flies, nymph rigs and small to medium streamers on rivers, streams and lakes. Reviewers call it forgiving and beginner-friendly, with good feel up close and the touch to protect light tippet. It weighs about 3.1 oz, a little heavier than many current 5 wt rods, and it is happiest inside about 60 feet rather than at maximum distance. It has the Handle A grip, a reversed half-Wells cork shape with no fighting butt.

Best for: one rod for most trout water, dry flies, nymphing, a first fly rod.

Line pairing: A 5 wt weight-forward floating trout line; a taper that runs a little heavy, such as SA Amplitude MPX, helps load the rod. We recommend the SA Amplitude Smooth Infinity (WF5F) or the SA Amplitude Smooth Trout GP (WF5F).

ERA F8904 - 9' 8 wt

The heavy ERA, for bass, salmon and steelhead, big streamers, weighted nymph rigs and wind-resistant flies on wide rivers and stillwater. The medium-fast action bends deep into the blank, which makes it easy to time with bulky flies. It weighs about 4 oz and has the Handle B grip, a full Wells cork shape with a short fighting butt to brace against when a big fish runs.

Best for: bass, steelhead and salmon, big streamers, windy days.

Line pairing: An 8 wt weight-forward floating line. We recommend the SA Amplitude Smooth Titan Long Taper (WF8F) or the SA Amplitude Smooth Grand Slam (WF8F).

ERA vs Other Douglas Fly Rods

The ERA is the entry point to the Douglas lineup, and Douglas names its LRS, another budget-friendly workhorse, as the closest match. If you want a step up in components and design, Douglas points to the Douglas DXF Gen 2 and the Douglas SKY G as its more advanced rods.
