Overview

The Orvis Superfine Graphite brings back the classic small-stream rods from Orvis's first graphite series about 50 years ago, redesigned with modern Helios construction techniques. Lower modulus graphite gives a slow to moderate action that loads deep at short range, protects light tippets and makes every fish fun, while the modern build recovers and tracks well for better accuracy.

All five models are 4-piece rods under 8 feet, from a 1 weight for tiny flies to a 5 weight for terrestrials and small streamers. Each carries the name of its classic predecessor laser engraved on the butt cap, and each is made in the USA for spring creeks, small freestone streams, trout and panfish.

Which Superfine Graphite Should You Choose?

The tiniest flies and lightest tippets: 3JBY0951 (7'6" 1 wt), The One-Weight.

Small dries and emergers on spring creeks: 3JBZ0951 (7'9" 2 wt), The Ultrafine.

One small-stream rod for most days: 3JB00951 (7'6" 3 wt), The Tippet.

Technical spring creeks and tailwaters: 3JB10951 (7'11" 4 wt), The Seven/Eleven.

Bushy dries, terrestrials, nymphs and small streamers: 3JB20951 (7'9" 5 wt), The Far & Fine.

Orvis Superfine Graphite Models

3JBY0951 - 7'6" 1 wt, The One-Weight

The go-to tool for presenting tiny flies on light tippets to tricky fish in small creeks. It turns small brook trout and panfish into a real fight.

Best for: tiny dries and midges, light tippet, the smallest creeks.

Line pairing: A true-to-weight 1 wt trout line. We recommend the Cortland Headwater (WF1F).

3JBZ0951 - 7'9" 2 wt, The Ultrafine

Designed for presenting smaller dries and emergers on spring creeks and small freestone streams, with the delicacy to protect fine tippet.

Best for: spring creek hatches, small freestone streams, emergers.

Line pairing: A delicate 2 wt trout line or double taper. We recommend the SA Amplitude Smooth Trout Expert (WF2F) or the SA Amplitude Textured Double Taper (DT2F).

3JB00951 - 7'6" 3 wt, The Tippet

A do-it-all small-stream rod, light enough for delicate work but with backbone for bigger fish. Reviewers found it loads deep and shines from 25 to 40 feet with dries and dry-droppers, and it handles fish well beyond what a 3 weight suggests, along with panfish and small bass.

Best for: small-stream brook and brown trout, dries and dry-droppers, panfish.

Line pairing: A 3 wt double taper or delicate trout taper. We recommend the SA Amplitude Textured Double Taper (DT3F) or the SA Amplitude Textured Trout Expert (WF3F).

3JB10951 - 7'11" 4 wt, The Seven/Eleven

A spring-creek dry fly rod for anywhere more length and delicacy help. It is accurate, protects tippets down to 7X, and in reviews it threw tight loops out to 50 feet, handled wind, roll cast and bow-and-arrow cast well, and turned over size 10 hoppers.

Best for: spring creeks, technical tailwaters, hoppers on small water.

Line pairing: A 4 wt double taper or true-to-weight trout taper. We recommend the SA Amplitude Textured Double Taper (DT4F) or the SA Amplitude Smooth Trout Expert (WF4F).

3JB20951 - 7'9" 5 wt, The Far & Fine

The most versatile Superfine Graphite, built for many techniques on smaller water: bushy dries, foam terrestrials, weighted nymphs and small streamers.

Best for: terrestrials, nymph rigs and small streamers on small to medium streams.

Line pairing: A 5 wt trout taper with enough front end for bigger flies. We recommend the SA Amplitude Smooth Infinity (WF5F) or the SA Amplitude Smooth Trout GP (WF5F).

Superfine Graphite vs Superfine Glass

Both are made in the USA at the same price. The Superfine Graphite uses lower modulus graphite for a slow to moderate action that is crisp and accurate, with a gray blank, cigar cork grip and aluminum reel seat with a cork insert. The Orvis Superfine Glass uses S-2 fiberglass for a slower, deeper-loading action with a classic glass feel, an olive blank and a burled hardwood reel seat insert. Choose graphite for a little more precision and wind handling, glass for the full fiberglass experience.

Orvis Superfine Graphite FAQ

What action is the Superfine Graphite?

Slow to moderate. Lower modulus graphite loads deep for close-range casting and tippet protection, while Helios construction keeps it accurate.

Which Superfine Graphite is best for small streams?

The 3JB00951 (7'6" 3 wt), The Tippet, is the all-round small-stream rod. Choose the 1 or 2 wt for the lightest presentations and the 5 wt for bigger flies.

What comes with it?

Each rod ships with a cloth-covered rod tube and a printed rod sock.

What is the warranty?

Orvis covers the Superfine under its 25-Year Guarantee for the original owner: Orvis repairs a broken rod, or replaces it with a model of equal or greater value if it cannot be repaired. Orvis charges a handling fee for each repair, and lost or stolen rods are not covered.
