Overview

The Sparkle Wing RS-2 is a variation on Rim Chung's RS-2, the "Rim's Semblance" emerger that has been a tailwater staple for decades. Umpqua suggests this version may catch even more fish than the original.

The difference is flash. A pearl wing and tail flicker as the fly drifts through the water column, which helps it get noticed among hundreds of naturals. The slim body and short wing still give the classic RS-2 shape of a small Baetis or midge working its way toward the surface.

How to Fish It

• Behind a heavier nymph: trail it 12 to 18 inches behind a weighted fly under an indicator.
• Near the surface: fish it in or just under the film behind a small dry during a BWO or midge emergence.
• Swing it: let it rise at the end of the drift like an emerging insect.
• Tippet: 6X or 7X.

Choosing Color and Size

Olive matches Blue-Winged Olives. Black matches dark midges and gives a strong silhouette. Purple is an attractor color that has a following on tailwaters.

Size 18 fits larger Baetis and midges. Size 22 is for small bugs and selective fish on flat water.
