Overview
The Rubberlegs Jigged Tungsten is Umpqua's jig version of its classic Rubberlegs stonefly, with a tungsten bead added to get it down fast. It keeps the mottled chenille body, weighted underbody and lots of rubber legs that made the original a high-water favorite.
When fish are hunkered down deep, it takes a big meal to get them to move. The tungsten bead and weighted body put this fly on the bottom quickly in fast, turbulent water, and the jig style rides point up for fewer snags. The legs pulse in the current like a stonefly nymph knocked loose from the rocks.
Euro Specs
- Bead: Tungsten.
- Hook: Jig style per product name; Umpqua's listing names a stout Tiemco 5262 and barbed packs.
- Role: Anchor (point) fly.
How to Fish It
- Euro nymphing: use it as the anchor in fast pocket water and deep runs, with a smaller nymph on a tag above.
- Indicator rig: fish it as the heavy top fly with a smaller nymph trailing.
- High water: drift it along soft edges and seams during runoff or after rain.
- Bottom bouncing: the jig style helps it tick along rocky bottoms with fewer snags.
Choosing Color and Size
Coffee-Black is a mottled, all-around stonefly color, and Dark Brown Brown matches darker stones and salmonfly nymphs.
Use 8 for big stoneflies and the heaviest water, and 10 as an all-around size that still anchors a rig.
