Description

Overview

The Neon Nightmare is a midge larva pattern from Umpqua signature tyer Matt McCannel. McCannel says himself that it doesn't necessarily look like anything in nature.

It works because of its fluorescent color. McCannel fishes it mostly on bright, sunny days through winter and spring, when it stands out without spooking fish. It is tied on a TMC 2488H, a short, stout hook with a wide gap that holds fish well for a fly this small.

How to Fish It

  • Trailing fly: fish it 12 to 18 inches behind a larger nymph or egg on 6X or 7X.
  • Bright days: tie it on when the sun is high and fish ignore drab midges.
  • Tailwaters: drift it through slow runs and seams below dams in winter and spring.
  • Add weight: use split shot or a heavier lead fly to get it near the bottom.

Choosing Color and Size

Orange and Pink are both fluorescent; try one, then switch if fish lose interest. Choose 18 for faster or slightly stained water, and 22 for slow, clear water. Orange is offered in 22 only.
