Description

Overview

The Cortland Nymph Series is built for modern nymphing: Euro and tight-line rigs, long leaders and fast hook sets in technical trout water. Cortland uses a super-light graphite blank that dampens and recovers quickly for feel, and finishes it in a low-reflective matte black for a stealthy approach.

An anodized down-locking reel seat with dual locking rings and a cork composite fighting butt balance the long rod in the hand, and over-sized light wire single foot guides let fly line, monofilament and knots pass easily. Ferrules and guides are coated in a durable epoxy, alignment dots speed up assembly, and every rod comes with a size-specific rod bag and a Cordura rod tube. We carry the three 10'6" models: 2, 3 and 4 wt.

Which Nymph Series Should You Choose?

Small trout, fine tippets and the most feel: 665491 (10'6" 2 wt).

One rod for most Euro and tight-line nymphing: 665507 (10'6" 3 wt).

Bigger trout, heavier flies and higher flows: 665514 (10'6" 4 wt).

Cortland Nymph Series Models

665491 - 10'6" 2 wt

The lightest rod we carry in the series, at 3.6 oz by Cortland's figures. A 2 wt line class on a 10'6" blank gives reach and a sensitive tip for small fish and the finest tippets.

Best for: small trout, low clear water, fine tippets.

Line pairing: A Euro nymph line for tight-line rigs, or a 2 wt weight-forward floating line for dries and indicator fishing. We recommend the SA Mastery Euro Tactical Nymph (0.022 in level) or the SA Amplitude Smooth Trout Expert (WF2F).

665507 - 10'6" 3 wt

The all-round Nymph Series, at 3.8 oz. One reviewer found it exceeded expectations for Euro nymphing and also handled heavy indicator rigs and small dries in a pinch.

Best for: all-round Euro and tight-line nymphing, indicator rigs.

Line pairing: A Euro nymph line for tight-line rigs, or a 3 wt weight-forward floating line for dries and indicator fishing. We recommend the SA Mastery Euro Tactical Nymph (0.022 in level) or the RIO Elite Technical Trout (WF3F).

665514 - 10'6" 4 wt

The heaviest line class we carry in the series, at 3.9 oz. The 4 wt has more backbone for bigger trout, heavier flies such as a pair of stoneflies, and higher flows.

Best for: bigger trout, heavier nymphs, higher water.

Line pairing: A Euro nymph line for tight-line rigs, or a 4 wt weight-forward floating line for dries and indicator fishing. We recommend the SA Mastery Euro Tactical Nymph (0.022 in level) or the SA Amplitude Textured Trout Expert (WF4F).

Nymph Series vs Other Cortland Nymph Rods

The Cortland Competition MkII Nymph Rod is Cortland's competition rod: a carbon fiber blank designed with its prostaff, a cigar cork grip, 2 and 3 wt from 10' to 11', and lighter model for model (3.4 oz for the 10'6" 3 wt against 3.8 oz for the Nymph Series). The Nymph Series covers more line weights, up to 4 wt in 10'6". If you want a complete starter setup, Cortland calls the Cortland Guide Series Euro Nymph Fly Rod Outfit its ultimate introductory Euro combo, with rod, reel, line and Euro leader in one box.

Cortland Nymph Series FAQ

What action is the Nymph Series?

Cortland describes the blank as super-light graphite that dampens and recovers quickly, and lists the action as fast recovery, for feel and fast hook sets on tight-line rigs.

Does it come with a case?

Yes. Each rod comes in a size-specific rod bag and a protective Cordura rod tube.

What is the warranty?

Cortland rods registered within 30 days of purchase are covered by Cortland's Limited Lifetime Warranty against defects in materials or workmanship for the original registered owner, when the rod is bought from an authorized Cortland retailer. A repair fee may apply for damage that is not caused by a manufacturing defect.

Which weight should I choose?

The 3 wt for most Euro and tight-line nymphing, the 2 wt for small trout and fine tippets, and the 4 wt for bigger fish, heavier flies and higher flows.

Is it only for Euro nymphing?

It is designed for modern nymphing techniques, and the over-sized guides pass fly line, monofilament and knots easily. With a floating line it also handles indicator rigs and small dries.

How is it different from the Competition MkII?

The MkII is Cortland's carbon fiber competition rod, a little lighter, with a cigar cork grip and 11' options. The Nymph Series adds a 4 wt and uses a super-light graphite blank with a matte black finish.
