Ross Reels

Ross Reels at AvidMax

Ross Reels got its start in 1973, when aerospace engineer Ross Hauck began building fly reels machined from solid aluminum bar stock, an idea few makers had tried. That approach still defines the brand today. Every Ross reel is designed, machined and assembled in Montrose, Colorado, with drags built in house. AvidMax carries the Ross fly reel lineup, from light click and pawl trout reels to sealed drag saltwater models, with real anglers ready to help you choose.

Why fish a Ross fly reel?

Machined in Montrose, Colorado

Ross builds its reels on Colorado's Western Slope, not far from the Uncompahgre and Gunnison rivers. Each frame and spool starts as a bar of 6061-T6 aluminum that gets cut on CNC machines to tight tolerances. The parts are then put together by hand in the same building. Ross also anodizes its reels in house, in a finishing shop that opened in 2023. Today the brand is part of Mayfly Outdoors, the Montrose company that also owns Abel. For you, that means a reel made by people who fish the same kind of water you do.

Drags built for trout and saltwater

A good drag should start smoothly and hold steady when a fish runs. Ross designs and builds its drags in house, and each series is matched to the job. The Evolution R and Evolution R Salt use a sealed stack of stainless steel and carbon discs with very low start up inertia, so light tippets are protected. The Animas uses a composite disc drag with a stainless interface for everyday freshwater fishing. For small streams, the Colorado keeps it simple with a classic click and pawl. Large arbors across the lineup help you pick up line fast.

Which Ross fly reel is right for you?

  • Ross Animas: A light, durable all around reel with a composite disc drag and a large arbor, and a longtime favorite of guides on trout water.
  • Ross Evolution LTX: A versatile freshwater reel with a smooth drag and a line channel that tucks your arbor knot out of the way.
  • Ross Evolution R: The top of the Ross freshwater line, with a sealed carbon and stainless drag that starts smoothly and protects fine tippets.
  • Ross Evolution R Salt: The saltwater version of the Evolution R, with a fully sealed carbon drag built for saltwater and hard running fish.
  • Ross Evolution FS: A semi caged, high capacity reel with a strong stacked drag, built for fresh or saltwater and for single or two handed rods.
  • Ross Colorado: A very light click and pawl reel with a large arbor, made for small creeks and light trout rods.
